Schultz earned 10 varsity letters at Central and received professional offers in both football and baseball.

He was head men's basketball coach at the University of Iowa from 1970-74 after serving as head baseball coach from 1964-70.

An athletics director at Virginia and Cornell, he served as executive director of the NCAA from 1987-94 and executive director of the U.S. Olympic Committee from 1995-2000.
