Christi Van Werden '91

Women's softball

The MVP of Central's 1991 NCAA Division III championship softball squad, Van Werden was also a member of the 1988 NCAA championship club while helping lead the Dutch a fourth-place national finish in 1989 and third place in 1990. An Osceola, Iowa native, she was a three-time women's basketball letterwinner, playing forward.
"Vanna" was a three-time all-Iowa Conference honoree as a first baseman and second baseman, the 1991 league MVP and a first-team All-America selection. She posted a school-record .371 career batting average. She was among the nation's most-feared sluggers in a pitcher-dominated era, breaking school season and career home run and slugging percentage marks. Yet she was also among the team's top base stealers. She was named a finalist for the NCAA Division III's 25-year all-star team in 2006.
After passing the Arizona and Montana state bar exams, she became a federal attorney as well as a Division I softball umpire.
