Central women's tennis team splits two matches at the USTA National Campus

The Dutch swept the doubles matches against Covenant


ORLANDO, FLA.— The Central College women's tennis team split decisions against Covenant College (Ga.) and the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) Wednesday.
           
Central took down the Scots 5-2 to start the day.
           
"Our women played really well and took care of business to secure the win," said coach Ryun Ferrell.
           
The Dutch started fast sweeping the doubles matches while only conceding one game. Emma Murphy (sophomore, Liberty, Mo.) and Lauren Gano (sophomore, Johnston) won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Madi Whalen (junior, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS) and Keleigh Hall (senior, Keokuk) won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and Abbie Den Adel (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) and Jayden Kissick (junior, Clinton) won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.
           
In the singles matches Central lost at Nos. 1 and 2 but finished well in the back half. Murphy picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and Emily Blom (freshman, Pella) moved into the lineup to snag a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Hall won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Kalina Schubert (senior, Newell, Newell-Fonda HS) dominated with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
           
Against St. Scholastica, the team was swept in the doubles matches, but two seniors were able to pull out wins in singles matches resulting in a 5-2 loss.
           
Hall earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles and Schubert battled for a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
           
"The team responded well, and our seniors fought hard and battled to win some matches," Ferrell said. "I loved the fight of this team, and we are looking forward to playing more matches tomorrow."
           
Thursday will be the final matches in Florida for Central starting with Wittenberg University at 8 a.m. EST at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center in Lakeland, Florida followed by Transylvania University (Ky.) at 6 p.m. EST back at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
