Central women’s tennis team sweeps Buena Vista

The Dutch won its first of three matches this week


PELLA— The Central College women's tennis team defeated Buena Vista University 7-0 in its first of three matches this week.
           
Central (6-4, 4-2 American Rivers) swept the doubles matches to grab the doubles point only conceding three games. Emma Murphy (sophomore, Liberty, Mo.) and Lauren Gano (sophomore, Johnston) won at No. 1 6-3. Becca Vala (senior, Omaha, Neb., Elkhorn HS) and Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (junior, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) defeated their opponent 6-0 at No. 2. Madi Whalen (junior, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS) played with Jennifer Larson (senior, Johnston) and won at No. 3, 6-0.
           
"We took care of business today," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We gave them no reason to be excited and that's what we wanted to do with a team like this. It was great to beat Buena Vista on a nice and cool Wednesday night."
           
In the singles matches the Dutch were just as dominant. Mahoney won at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2. Vala moved up to No. 2 for the first time this season and won 6-1, 6-0. Gano also won easily grabbing a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3.
           
Murphy continued the success at No. 4 singles winning 6-0, 6-1.
           
"She looked so good, Ferrell said. "I'm glad to see her look so tough and she played hard."
           
Emily Blom (freshman, Pella)
sat out of doubles but won her third singles match in a row securing a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. Keleigh Hall (senior, Keokuk) also won without giving up a game winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6
           
The squad returns to the court when it hosts Wartburg College Friday at 4 pm on the Pella High School tennis courts. The team also has a match Saturday morning hosting Coe College at 10 a.m.
