PELLA —The Central College women's tennis team defeated the University of Dubuque 6-3 Friday afternoon, relying on the depth of its lineup to get the job done.
Central (4-3, 3-1 American Rivers Conference) used eight players to fill out its lineup and six of them contributed to at least one point.
"It's nice to have the depth and be able to do some good things with it," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "When you can bring out new players for singles that didn't play in doubles it can help a lot. It allows you to play longer and have more balls in the tank to hit."
Jenna Hernandez (senior, Slater, Ballard HS) and
Becca Vala (junior, Omaha, Neb., Elkhorn HS) won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and then both won their singles matches. Hernandez won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles while Vala won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.
"They stared a little slow in doubles," Ferrell said. "Jenna looked solid and found a way to finish her opponent off and Becca just took care of business."
The freshman duo of
Lauren Gano (freshman, Johnston) and
Emma Murphy (freshman, Liberty, Mo.) won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles, their second conference win together.
"They are thick as thieves," Ferrell said. "They are so coachable and I'm looing forward to what they can bring the table for four years."
Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (sophomore, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) and
Brianna Lindstrom (senior, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Central has two home matches Saturday starting with Loras College at 10 a.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts. The second match is a 2 p.m. meeting across town with the University of St. Mary (Kan.) at the Pella High School courts.
