ALTOONA, WISCONSIN—
Harold Dobernecker (Nevada) is making subpar his standard for the Central College men's golf team.
Dobernecker has gone under par in his first six rounds of the fall season, extending his sizzling streak with a 1-under 70 at the par-71 Eau Claire Golf and Country Club Sunday in the opening round of the 36-hole Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational.
Dobernecker, who took medalist honors at the Carthage (Wis.) Fall Invitational last Monday and Tuesday, stands fourth individually. He tied for fourth in the same tourney a year ago. Central is fourth in the 18-team field at 305. Bethel University (Minn.) has a comfortable lead at 291 while the host University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire follows at 298. Central is the only American Rivers team in the field.
Jacob Moffett (junior, Mount Pleasant) had three birdies but closed both nines with double bogeys to shoot 77.
"I thought he played really solid and could have been a few shots better, for sure," coach
Mel Blasi said.
Cole McGriff (junior, Grinnell) and
Blake Wynn (sophomore, Milan, Ill., Sherrard HS) each shot 79 and
John Oltman (junior, Pella) had 88.
"Cole and Blake, I think just a few little shots here or there, if they go their way, that turns a 79 into a 75 pretty easily," Blasi said.
Playing as an at-large entrant,
Kayden Pendergrass (junior, Mount Vernon) shot 83.
The story for Dobernecker again was consistency. He had just one bogey, countered with two birdies.
"He hit a lot of greens today," Blasi said. "It's an old country club and the greens are small. If you're going to score well, you've got to hit a lot of greens and it's hard to do. I thought he did a good job of lag putting and putting the ball in good position. It's kind of fun to watch."
He's bidding for his third consecutive top-five individual finish, having finished fifth in a 95-player field at the 54-hole Transylvania (Ky.) Invitational Sept. 2-3 before winning at Carthage.
Blasi is confident the Dutch can improve their team standing in Monday's round, which starts at 10 a.m.
"I didn't think we played near what we're capable of as a team," Blasi said. "That's the first time we've been over 300 all year so we'll see if we can get it back down there tomorrow."
