PELLA — Getting a group of players their first matches of the season, the Central College women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision Wednesday afternoon.
Several Central (3-3) players made their season debuts against the Vikings (1-0), including all five singles players who competed.
"I like these matches because I like watching other players get a chance to play," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "They play so hard and give us everything they've got. They're playing against some good talent."
The closest match of the night belonged to
Kalina Schubert (sophomore, Newell, Newell-Fonda HS) at No. 5 singles who lost 6-3, 4-6, 1-0.
"In the beginning, her opponent was coming in and being aggressive," Ferrell said. "Kalina was able to slow her down and play her type of tennis"
A handful of Dutch players are playing in the ITA Division III Midwest Regional in St. Peter, Minnesota this weekend.
Jennifer Larson (sophomore, Johnston) and
Jenna Hernandez (junior, Slater, Ballard HS) will play in the singles bracket. Larson will play with
Madi Whalen (freshman, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS) and Hernandez will play with
Alex Griggs (senior, Knoxville) in doubles matches.
"They're going to face some quality opponents," Ferrell said. "They'll play hard and represent Central well. We're hoping to see them win some matches."
