Central blanks Simpson women’s tennis team

Dutch grab first conference win

INDIANOLA — Getting its first American Rivers Conference win of the season, the Central College women's tennis team beat Simpson College 9-0 Friday afternoon.

Central (2-2, 1-0 conference) blanked the Storm (1-4, 1-3 conference) as a young team continues to find its groove.

"We're starting to figure out how to play tough tennis," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "Anytime you can beat a rival at their place it's a good thing."

Jennifer Larson (sophomore, Johnston) was victorious 7-6, 6-2 in her No. 1 singles match, her first win of the season and first as a No. 1 player.

"She figured some stuff out today," Ferrell said. "She played smart. She went for it when she should and didn't when she shouldn't."

Alex Griggs (senior, Knoxville) and Jenna Hernandez (junior, Slater, Ballard HS) powered to an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Griggs also won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Hernandez won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

"They finally got a win under their belt," "They are starting to do a lot of different things out there on the court that a lot of other teams don't do. They did a good job keeping their opponents off balance so they could keep attacking."

Larson and Madi Whalen (freshman, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS) won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Taylor Wyeth (junior, Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) and Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (freshman, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Brianna Lindstrom (junior, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and Alli Kreider (junior, Norwalk) won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Ashlyn Brant (senior, Glidden, Carroll HS) won by walkover at No. 6 singles.

Central hosts Buena Vista University at 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon in its next match.
