Dutch down Monmouth in opener

PELLA — The Central College women's tennis team started the 2022 fall season with a 6-3 road win at Monmouth College (Ill.) Saturday afternoon.

The Dutch (1-0) were playing the program's first match after graduating a large senior class and the new lineup was able to earn a road win to kick off the campaign. The Dutch used nine different players, including three newcomers.

"We played like a team that's brand new," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We had amazing energy and effort, we just need to play more. We'll be a formidable team."

The No. 3 team of Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (freshman, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) and Taylor Wyeth (junior, Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) were both making their Central debut, winning 8-0. Madi Whalen (freshman, Kansas City, Mo, Park Hill HS) also made her debut, winning the No. 2 doubles match with Jennifer Larson (sophomore, Johnston) 8-2.

"They are all very talented," Ferrell said. "We're trying to ease them into the process and we're deep enough to do that."

Alex Griggs (senior, Knoxville) was 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles and Brianna Lindstrom (junior, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Alli Krieder (junior, Norwalk) and Ashlynn Brant (senior, Glidden, Carroll HS) were 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 5 and 6, respectively.

"This is a trademark of our program," "We've got a deep team and it's something we take a lot of pride in. We have a next person up mentality."

Central opens American Rivers Conference play next Saturday, hosting Coe College at 10 a.m.
