Central opens outdoor track season at Wartburg

Four individual titles for Dutch at Outdoor Select Meet

WAVERLY — The Central College men's track and field ran its first competition of the outdoor season Friday at Wartburg College for the Wartburg Outdoor Select Meet.

The Dutch men tied for third with 100 points and the Dutch women were sixth with 43 points. Wartburg won the men's title with 196 points and Loras won the team title with 187 points.

"We don't go into many meets really worried about where we finish as a team," coach Brandon Sturman said. "This week in particular half of our team was down in St Louis and we held some other people back as well."

Central swept the hammer throws with Theo Baldus (senior, St. Ansgar) winning the men's with a toss of 173-2 and Abby Marr (junior, Riceville) won the women's with 155-5.

"Regardless of marks, going to a meet of this caliber early in the season and winning is really exciting," Sturman said. "To hit PRs and build off some of their indoor momentum is another positive."

Brock Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) and Sam Beatty (junior, Mount Pleasant) won the men's long jump and high jump titles, respectively. The last time those two competed was at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships three weeks ago. Drake Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) was also third in the high jump (6-2.75).

"For Sam, I think it's building off the indoor season," "He's trying to get back to where he was last year. It's probably Brock's best first meet he's had at Central. He had his best jump on the first attempt and then was pretty consistent after that."

Nolan Reynolds (junior, Montezuma) was second in the 400-meter dash in 50.00 seconds. He also anchored the second place 4x100-meter relay team in a time of 42.71. He was joined by JD Elefson (freshman, Ankeny, North Polk HS), Brock Lewis and Kale Purcell (freshman, Holton, Kan.).

Nick Thompson (senior, Newhall, Benton HS) was second in the javelin throw (158-5), Carter Tryon (senior, Winterset) was third in the 400-meter hurdles (57.98 seconds) and Connor Miklos (sophomore, Lockport, Ill., Providence Catholic HS) was third in the 110-meter hurdles (16.58 seconds).

Abby Gruver (sophomore, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS), Abbi Roerdink (sophomore, Tiffin, Ohio, Hopewell-Loudon HS), Elsie Thoreson (sophomore, Pella) and Lauren Brown (sophomore, Underwood) were third in the women's 4x400-meter relay in 4:10.50.

"Those four ran well indoors," Sturman said. "We'd like that time to get closer to 4:00."

Brown was also fourth in the 400 in 1:01.60. Cali Coffman (junior, Leawood, Kan., Blue Valley HS) was third in the pole vault (9-6.25) and Alyssa Striegel (freshman, Mount Pleasant) was fourth in the discus throw (1:01.60).
