PELLA — The Central College women's tennis team picked up another victory Saturday afternoon, downing Northwestern College 6-3.
The Dutch (11-9) took down the Red Raiders (4-5) a day after they had beaten a tough Simpson team 8-1.
"The toughness factor is definitely there," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "We just need to play more and get back to a similar place we were in October. It takes time but the team knows where they are going."
In its fifth match of the spring, Central's bottom half of its singles lineup featured three new faces not in its fall lineup.
Alli Krieder (sophomore, Norwalk) won 7-5, 6-7, 10-5 at No. 4,
Jenna Hernandez (sophomore, Slater, Ballard HS) won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 and
Ashlynn Brant (junior, Glidden, Carroll HS) won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6.
"We had three players in the lineup who weren't there in the fall win," Ferrell said. "it's neat to see because it keeps you excited about the future."
Hernandez overcame a 5-2 deficit in the second set of her singles match.
"That's not easy to do against anybody," Ferrell said. "She was able to keep her composure, stay calm and change her style a little bit."
Hernandez and
Alex Griggs (senior, Knoxville) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Alyssa Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) and
Maddie Hartley (senior, Clarinda) won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
The Dutch men's and women's tennis teams travel to William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri to play the NCAA Division II school at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
