WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The four members of the Central College men's track and field distance medley relay team and long jumper
Brock Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) stood on the All-American podium Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Through five scored events, Central's men's team is tied for 13th in the team standings with six points.
In the distance medley relay,
Adam Sylvia (junior, Rochester, Mass., Old Rochester HS),
Carter Tryon (senior, Winterset),
Noah Jorgenson (sophomore, Sidney) and
Will DeHaan (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS finished eighth in 10 minutes, 1.83 seconds.
"Times go out the window at the national meet," Sturman said. "They gave it everything they had, competed well and Will finished it off strong. I couldn't be happier for them, especially the two seniors."
Jorgenson was 11th in the 800-meter run prelims in 1:53.62, missing Saturday's finals.
Lewis registered his best long jump mark on his second attempt, reaching 23 feet, 10 inches and finishing fourth.
"Brock and I talked about going out there and not overthinking it," Sturman said. "He went out there and got a good start in his first jump and then his second jump was even better. He fouled on his last jump and it was so close that they looked at the camera again and then I protested because I thought it was a big jump and they looked again but still called it a foul. It was still the best series he's had all year and some of the best jumping he's had at national meet."
Abby Marr (junior, Riceville) finished just off the podium in the women's weight throw, placing ninth with a toss of 55 feet, 4.15 inches. The top-nine finish qualified her for the finals and gave her an extra three throws at the national level.
"The experience is super valuable to someone like her who has another ear coming back and has grown so much over the time here," Sturman said. "I think she's feeling confident and looking forward to outdoor and the future."
At the halfway point of the men's heptathlon,
Brody Klein (sophomore, Rainier, Wash.) is 11th with 2,599 points and
Lucas Heitz (senior, Adel, ADM HS) is 19th with 2,408 points.
"In general, day two has been our stronger day so we're looking forward to it," Sturman said.
Day two of action for Central starts with the men's high jump at 11 a.m. (EST).
