DES MOINES — Using a younger lineup, the Central College women's tennis team lost 7-0 against Grand View University Wednesday night.
The Vikings (3-1) beat a Dutch (4-5) squad that was using a completely different singles lineup than it used in Saturday's win against Nebraska Wesleyan University.
"We can put together a lineup and compete against anybody," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "It doesn't matter who we are playing, we compete and play well. I was so proud of them."
Though Central did not score a point, they did win one of the individual matches. The No. 3 doubles pairing of sophomore
Paige Farrell (Chariton) and freshman
Kalina Schubert (Newell, Newell-Fonda HS) won 7-6. The match was played under a format where the three doubles decisions were worth one point.
"It was really exciting to see them win," Ferrell said. "I thought it was outstanding."
Alex Griggs (senior, Knoxville) and
Jenna Hernandez (sophomore, Slater, Ballard HS) nearly swung the doubles point before losing 7-6 in the No. 1 slot.
Simpson comes to Pella to play Central at noon Saturday.
"It's going to be a big one," Ferrell said. "It's a conference match and everybody is out to get everybody. Simpson has some real talent and some good seniors. We need to play tough and make their life hard."
