DUBUQUE — Another individual champion was crowned and four more all-conference accolades were awarded to the Central College men's track and field team at the American Rivers Conference Championships Saturday.
The Dutch finished fourth in the team standings with 133 points. Wartburg College had a winning total of 247 points.
Brock Lewis (junior, Lathrop, Mo.) secured an individual title with a triple jump of 46 feet, 3.5 inches, a slight improvement of his previous best effort of the season.
"It was definitely not the most favorable conditions when he jumped in the morning," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "He hasn't jumped in awhile because of an injury but it was great to see him out there and to get a championship."
Nate Sanders (senior, Waukee) came within .39 seconds of winning the 5,000-meter run, placing second in 14:54.51.
"It was a great race by Nate," Sturman said. "It was a very tactical race so it wasn't super fast at the start. You could tell by how he finished the race that he had a lot left in him."
After grabbing the last qualifying spot in the 400-meter dash Friday,
Nolan Reynolds (sophomore, Montezuma) jumped all the way from eighth to third to earn all-conference accolades in a time of 49.34 seconds.
"He ran 49 a few weeks back and we were super pumped because we knew he had it in him," Sturman said. "He was able to build off of that and made a name for himself in the conference."
Reynolds anchored the sixth-place 4x100-meter relay team to a time of 43.06 seconds, running after
Joe Stein (freshman, Milford, Okoboji HS), Lewis and
Carter Tryon (junior, Winterset). Tryon was also fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (55.77) and Stein was fifth in the 100-meter dash (10.89) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (22.42).
In the pole vault,
Tanner Johnson (senior, Gallatin, Mo.) cleared 13-9.25 and took third place. He was also fourth in the javelin throw (158-11), edging teammate
Nick Thompson's (junior, Newhall, Benton HS) fifth-place toss (157-5).
Will DeHaan (junior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) added an eighth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (3:55.76) and
Noah Jorgenson (freshman, Sidney) was also eighth in the 800-meter run.
Reynolds,
Grant Boyse (sophomore, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS), Jorgenson and Tryon were sixth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:19.69).
A select group of athletes will compete at either North Central College's Gregory Invitational or Augustana College's (Ill.) Twilight Qualifier next Wednesday and Thursday.
