Dutch distance runners, discus throwers get early start at Dubuque

DUBUQUE — The Spartan Invitational started Friday night with the discus throw, 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run and the Central College men's and women's track and field squads had 10 top-eight finishes.
           
Central leads the women's team standings with 31 points. The men are third with 18.
           
The Dutch women placed three in the discus throw, led by Gillian Streit (senior, Manilla, Harlan HS) who was the runner up at 137 feet, 7.25 inches. Kennedy Morris (senior, Earlham) was third (136-6.25) and Abby Marr (sophomore, Riceville) was eighth (110-3).
           
Men's thrower Theo Baldus (junior, St. Ansgar) was also the runner-up in the discus throw with a toss of 149-3.75.
           
Jack Orengo (sophomore, Naperville, Neuqua Valley HS)
was second in the men's 10,000-meter run in 33 minutes, 11.59 seconds. Women's runner Hailey Hill (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nevada, West Career and Technical Academy) was third in her 10,000-meter race (40:31.97).
           
Three Dutch freshmen earned points in the women's 5,000-meter race. Megan Johnson (Parkersburg, Aplington-Parkersburg HS) was fifth (19:39.95), Lindsey Davidson (Northwood, Northwood-Kensett HS) was sixth (19:50.05) and Layken Bytnar (Bettendorf) was eighth (20:12.48)
           
Nate Sanders (senior, Waukee) was seventh (15:09.20) in the men's 5,000-meter race.
           
Day two of the Spartan Invitational starts Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
