DES MOINES — Saturday's session of the Drake Relays saw another batch of Central College men's and women's track and field athletes compete at the famed blue oval.
No team scores were kept for the college division in which Central competed.
"It was a good day for us," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "The athletes we had competing were pretty young and the weather made for some tough conditions. We competed hard against some good competition."
Holly Forrester (senior, Manhattan, Kan., Rock Creek HS) had a top-10 outing in the women's triple jump, placing ninth with a leap of 36 feet, 4 inches.
"That was a pretty good day for Holly," Sturman said. "It was the most consistent series she's had during the outdoor season.
Joe Stein (freshman, Milford, Spirit Lake HS) was just off his season-best time in the men's 200-meter dash, finishing 11th in 22.26 seconds.
"We're both pretty happy with that time," Sturman said. "He was running 22's during the indoor season so we're hoping to get down to 21 seconds outdoors."
The women's 4x400-meter relay squad of
Mary Gray (senior, West Des Moines, Waukee HS), Abbi Roerdink (freshman, Tiffin, Ohio, Hopewell-Loudon HS), Elsie Thoreson (freshman, Pella) and
Hadyn Miller (freshman, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) was 12th in 4:02.27. Thoreson also ran the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.43, taking 11th.
"That was two seconds better than last week and the conditions were worse," Sturman said
Will DeHaan (junior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) was 13th in the men's 800-meter run (1:54.81).
Mari Stein (freshman, Okoboji) and
Caroline McMartin (freshman, Pella) were 20th (2:23.05 and 21st (2:25.34) in the women's 800-meter run.
Central's men's 4x400-meter relay squad of
Nolan Reynolds (sophomore, Montezuma), DeHaan,
Noah Jorgenson (freshman, Sidney) and Carter Tryon (junior, Winterset) was 22nd in 3:22.46.
Central hosts a triangular with Simpson College and Nebraska Wesleyan University Friday starting with field events at 3 p.m.
