PELLA — Getting its outdoor season started at home, the Central College men's track and field team totaled the most points in a small meet Friday afternoon.

Central racked up 319.5 points, well ahead of No. 2 Simpson College's 110. Small squads from Truman State University (Mo.), Faith Baptist Bible College and Southwestern Community College also participated in a meet riddled with high winds.

"It ended up being a smaller meet than we anticipated but I think everybody went out there and competed," coach Brandon Sturman said. "Even though times and marks are not reflective of where we are at because of the wind, I think they'll come along as we get further in the season."

The indoor long jump conference champion, Brock Lewis (junior, Lathrop, Mo.) is already No. 3 nationally after hitting a winning mark of 23 feet, 3 inches.

"That's a pretty good first meet for Brock," Sturman said. "It was especially cold and windy when he jumped in the morning."

Joe Stein (freshman, Milford, Spirit Lake HS) opens at No. 2 nationally in the 100-meter dash (10.70 seconds) and No. 29 in the 200-meter dash (22.25). He won both events Friday and his 100-meter time is already No. 4 at Central. Lucas Heitz (sophomore, Adel, ADM HS) won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.27 seconds.

"Joe ran well," Sturman said. "Lucas hurdled phenomenal today."

Drake Lewis (junior, Lathrop, Mo.) and Sam Beatty (sophomore, Mount Pleasant) shared the title high jump title after clearing 6-5. Tanner Johnson (senior, Gallatin, Mo.) won the pole vault at 13-11.

Carter Tryon (junior, Winterset) won the first 400-meter hurdle race of the season in 1:01.96. Freshman Brayden Harris (Eldora, South Hardin HS) was second in 1:02.74. In the open 400 meters, Nolan Reynolds (sophomore, Montezuma) was second (51.56 seconds). Noah Jorgensen (freshman, Sidney) won the 1,500 meters in 4:04.26)
 
In Friday's throwing events, Theo Baldus (junior, St. Ansgar) was Central's tom hammer thrower (147-9) and Thomas Spoehr (junior, Bennington, Neb.) was the leading shot putter (41-8). Both Baldus and Spoehr finished second.

Central is slated to compete at the Spartan Invitational in Dubuque next Friday and Saturday.
