Contagious energy for Dutch men at William Penn track meet

Central wins seven events

OSKALOOSA— The Central College men's track and field team won seven events at the William Penn Invitational Friday.

Central had seven event champions in a meet without team scores. Coach Sturman was happy with not only the performances of his team but also the enthusiasm.

"Whenever you get to a meet and start winning events and hitting PRs, it's contagious," coach Brandon Sturman said. "When somebody does something good, other people start feeding off of it."

Nolan Reynolds (sophomore, Montezuma) won the 400-meter dash in 49.68 seconds. He followed with a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.48 seconds). He also ran on the winning 4x400-meter relay team.

"Nolan was the star of the day," Sturman said, "That 400 was a two-second lifetime PR and then he came back strong in the 200."

The winning 4x400 team also included Danny Devenuto (junior, Plainfield, Ill., North HS), Noah Jorgenson (freshman, Sidney) and Carter Tryon (junior, Winterset) and finished in 3:22.26.

The Dutch dominated the mid-distance races, winning the 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Jorgenson took the 800 (1:55.56) and 1,500 (4:03.19) titles after Will DeHaan (junior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) bested the steeplechase field (9:38.06).

"Noah ran phenomenal," Sturman said. "He had a good split in the 4x400, too. I'm happy with how he ran today."

DeHaan was also the runner-up in the 800 (1:55.95) and Adam Sylvia (sophomore, Boston, Mass., Old Rochester HS) was third (1:57.87). Nate Sanders (senior, Waukee) added a second-place effort in the 1500 (4:06.03) and Caleb Silver (sophomore, Conrad, BCLUW HS) was silver in the steeplechase (9:45.42)

Tryon was second in the 400-meter hurdles (57.28 seconds) and Brayden Harris (freshman, Eldora, South Hardin HS) was third (57.99).

Joe Stein (freshman, Milford, Okoboji HS) was third in the 100-meter dash in 10.77 seconds and anchored the runner-up 4x100-meter relay team to a time of 43.06. He was joined by Tryon, Brock Lewis (junior, Lathrop, Mo.) and Jacob Dick (junior, Winterset).

Theo Baldus (junior, St. Ansgar) was second in the discus throw (151-2) and fourth in the hammer throw (146-7)

Tanner Johnson (senior, Gallatin, Mo.) and Devenuto were event champions in the pole vault and triple jump, respectively. Johnson cleared 12-5.5 in the pole vault and Devenuto had a mark of 39-1.75 in the triple jump.

Next weekend, Central will be represented at the Drake Relays in Des Moines and the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola. The Drake Relays are Friday and Saturday for the College Division while the Kip Janvrin is Friday only.
