Central’s Lewis breaks conference triple jump record

Junior sets school and conference record for indoor triple jump

PELLA — A record-breaking effort in the triple jump by junior Brock Lewis (Lathrop, Mo.) highlighted the Central College men's track and field's triangular meet against Loras College and Buena Vista University Saturday.

The Dutch finished runner-up with 104.5 points. Loras College won the title with 119.5 and Buena Vista was third with 53.

Lewis leapt 48 feet, 1.75 inches on his fifth jump of the day to break the school and American Rivers Conference record for the triple jump. Lewis had jumped a season-best 46-5.5 last Saturday.
"I thought it was a big jump last week but he was even more motivated this week." Coach Sturman said. "He's feeling the differences in his jumps and now hopefully we can go win a conference championship.

Carter Tryon (senior, Winterset) had the best 400-meter dash time (51.31 seconds) and the third-best 200-meter dash effort (22.95). Joe Stein (Milford, Spirit Lake HS) won that 200 in 22.72 after getting second in the 60-meter dash (6.99 seconds).

"Carter went out there today and ran well," Sturman said. "He PRed in the 200 and 400. He's super motivated and a great leader for us. It's great to see him excelling when it counts."

Theo Baldus (junior, St. Ansgar) had a pair of second-place efforts in the weight throw (52-10.75) and shot put (44-6.750. The weight throw was a career-best mark and good for No. on Central's all-time list.

Central runners topped the field in both distance events as Will DeHaan (junior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) won the mile in 4:18.98 and Nate Sanders (senior, Waukee) took the 3,000-meter run in 8:58.02.

Pole vaulter Tanner Johnson (senior, Gallatin, Mo.) had a season-best clearance of 14-0.5, placing first. Danny Devenuto (junior, Plainfield, Ill., North HS) was second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.86 seconds).

Devenuto, Jorgenson, Adam Sylvia (sophomore, Boston, Mass., Old Rochester HS) and DeHaan were the 4x400-meter relay champions in 3:30.34.

Central is headed to the American Rivers Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships next Sunday at 10 a.m. in Waverly.

"We've been seeing our conference opponents each week with these triangular meets," Sturman said. "Maybe it's a little more motivating because we know what we can do against them. We're excited to see what happens and hopefully we can reach our goals."
