Central men win second track meet of season

Dutch outpace Simpson and Luther in triangular

PELLA — The field events packed a punch for the Central College men's indoor track and field team in winning a home triangular meet Saturday afternoon.

Central tallied 116 points, outpacing Simpson's 87 and Luther's 74.

"I'm super proud of the men today," Sturman said. "We competed really well all around"

Remaining undefeated this season in the long jump and triple jump, Brock Lewis (junior, Lathrop, Mo.) won both events. His triple jump reached 46 feet, 5.5 inches and he long jumped 23-0.75.

Central also had the winning pole vault (13-5.5) from Tanner Johnson (senior, Gallatin, Mo.) and the top high jump (6-4) from Matt Riedemann (freshman, Calumet, South O'Brien HS).

"We had a really good day in all of the jumps," Sturman said. "For Matt, that's a big mark as a freshman. He loves that event. It's always awesome when your teaching a freshman to be a multi-eventer but they can still hit big marks in open events."

Joe Stein (freshman, Milford, Spirit Lake HS) had another strong weekend, winning both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash for the second week in a row. He matches his personal-best time in the 60-meter dash (6.95 seconds) and improved his 200-meter dash time to 22.57 seconds.

"He continues to impress in both of his events," Sturman said. "He's getting better every week."

Danny Devenuto (junior, Plainfield, Ill., North HS), Nolan Reynolds (sophomore, Montezuma), Grant Boyse (sophomore, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) and Carter Tryon (junior, Winterset) teamed up for the top 4x400-meter relay time (3:29.74).

"We finally broke 3:30," Sturman said. "That's a mark we've been really working towards."

Thrower Theo Baldus (junior, St. Ansgar) recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the shot put (43-8.5) and weight throw (50-7.25). Reynolds was second in the 400-meter dash (53.01 seconds) and Jack Orengo (sophomore, Naperville, Ill., Neuqua Valley HS) was second in the 3,000-meter run (9:06.93).

Central hosts its third and final triangular next Saturday against Buena Vista University and Loras College.
