PELLA — Overcoming a 2-1 deficit after doubles, Central College women's tennis sophomore
Alyssa Lewton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) clinched a 5-4 team victory over Northwestern College with her No. 4 singles triumph Friday night.
The Dutch (9-7) needed to win four singles matches in order to secure a team victory after dropping a pair of doubles contest. The final nail in the coffin was struck by Lewton and her 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-5 win.
"She turned that match around in a hot minute," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "She lost the first set on a breaker but she won that second match really fast. In the final breaker, she got up big and fast to put her away. I was really impressed with the way she played today."
Sami Thompson (senior, Knoxville) and
Alex Griggs (freshman, Knoxville) swept through their No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches in 6-0, 6-0 fashion.
"Sami is one of the steadiest players I've ever coached," Ferrell said. "She's always going to play at a certain level and if you want to beat her you have to go above that level.
"Alex is really figuring out how to play this game smart. I love watching her play."
Bronwyn Metcalf (sophomore, Pella) recorded the other singles win 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.
The No. 3 doubles team of Griggs and
Macy Scharff (sophomore, Oskaloosa) added a dominant showing and 8-0 victory.
"They're turning into a pretty solid team for us," Ferrell said. "They went and took care of business pretty fast. It was good to see them do it."
